An evening with the Judges

This evening I gave a speech to the annual meeting of Indiana Appeal Court Judges. It was a privilege to address them. My sister Barbara is an attorney and brother Stephen is a judge. I have many friends who are attorneys and several who are judges. Most people associate the legal profession with their role as courtroom actors and activists. That’s the media view we get about their profession. But they are on the front line of the the safety in our communities. They are asked to remain composed and focused in the face of unimaginable defiance and human pathology. And they are asked to restrain their human impulses and follow the strictures and restraints of the legal code. That’s an unimaginable challenge for most of us. And it occurs to me that what some miss about this career is that these professionals are also scholars of the law, academics in applied practice. It is something few of us have the temperament to comport ourselves without misplaced passions. Bravo to my new friends on the bench serving across the state. Thank you and bless you!
