Healthcare Communication

My next graduate class at Purdue begins next Monday. I will once again be leading the class on Strategic Communication and Health Care. This topic is of special interest to me. I have led this class several times over the past few years. The content is rich and broadly focused on the communication challenges that arise all through the health care industry. It’s a broad overview topic that we can all appreciate. And importantly, it is an issue we face as individuals all the time. Think about communication between patients and the medical staff, the medical staff and the insurance provider. Poor communication is a struggle all throughout the health care system. And as I said, we know this from our personal experience. ‘Do I really feel understood by the nurse and my physician? Do I feel confident that my primary care professionals communicate with the specialists I need? Does the hospital system adequately communicate with my insurance company?’ And on and on … And this is just the struggle within the direct care experience. Going up the authority chain how reliable is the communication among the various medical institutions at play? The student professionals in our Purdue program and courses are being sensitized and equipped to see that challenges that travel all across the healthcare landscape. As the weeks go by I will share the issues being studied and discussed and bring them out here in the Blog! Hope you will find it edifying to read the amazing insights of my wonderful graduate students!
