Pope Leo XIV
The exciting news this past week was the selection of a new Pope for the Catholic Church—a moment that surprised and the world. Cardinal Robert Prevost, a Chicago native, brings with him a long record of international service, impressive scholarly achievements, and a deep commitment to the poor and marginalized. He has pledged to continue the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, and stands as a devoted Christian leader for our time.
Reading about his background, I was struck by how much I could relate to his early life. I, too, grew up in a devout Catholic family in New York. Like Leo, I attended a minor seminary for high school. But our paths diverged after that. While he continued in his faith journey toward the priesthood, I drifted away from both faith and practice during college and young adulthood. I eventually returned to Christianity in my thirties—but not to Catholicism.
Reflecting on those early years, I can’t help but consider the choices that led me away from Leo’s path. I’m sure my mother had quietly hoped I might have stayed the course and pursued the priesthood. The early similarities between our lives make me admire even more the depth of his devotion and the remarkable arc of his vocation.
One small note of connection between us: we share the same birthday—September 14. For him, it marks a life of profound service and purpose. For me, it’s a day filled with memories, laughter, and the joys of learning and love. We each took a journey. He became the Pope. I became a comedian.
Sorry, Mom—I never made it to the papacy. But I am praying for you, Robert… er… Pope Leo!
