TomDukesPsychotherapy and Spirituality Psychotherapy And Spirituality Dr. Tom Dukes, Director of the Graduate Counseling Program at Rhode Island College is, like Dr. Will, a psychotherapist with years of experience working with individuals and families. In years past, psychotherapists were trained to be skeptical of a client’s espoused spiritual and religious views. The operating suspicion was that such ideas as these were defense mechanisms covering for some underlying anxiety. But this antiquated approach has evolved so that the content of the ideas are taken seriously and not dismissed out of hand. We talk about how these ideas and beliefs can represent legitimate insights into the human condition. When are spiritual notions a reflection of deep connection to transcendent ideas or, as in the past, true defenses to be addressed.

Special Thanks to announcer Andre Lucas & musical director & theme writer Bent Laidler.

Sudden Health Setbacks!

You must have the Adobe Flash Player installed to view this player.

Andre_WebSudden Health Setbacks! Don't know a person who hasn't, at one time or another, had their life routine suddenly stopped cold by an unexpected, unforseen health crisis. It might have been you or someone close. When this happens, even if and when it passes, you never really go back to normal. Friend Andre Lucas (also the deep baritone voice of the podcast) was jarred with a diagnoses of Stage 4 Cancer a decade ago. We talk about his experience and life after the episode. We discuss the notion of Post Traumatic Growth, the role of optimism and spirituality. Even if your crisis wasn't cancer, I imagine you can relate to the experience!

Special Thanks to announcer Andre Lucas & musical director & theme writer Bent Laidler.

Unconscious Behavior!

You must have the Adobe Flash Player installed to view this player.

Sally_2Unconscious Behaviors Most of us are aware of the behaviors that cause us difficulty. Most often we think of the obvious such as smoking, eathing or drinking. But what about those behaviors so ingrained in our personality that they are unconscious? These are the tougher ones to change like our impatience, our short temper or impulsivity. And yet these are the behaviors that usually drive a wedge in our closest relationships. Dr. Sally and I talk about the way these impact our closest connections.

Post Traumatic Growth We are all familiar with the term PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Recent research into the effects of trauma now consider the possibility of growth coming from the experience. Dr. Tom Dukes and I discuss this hopeful new perspective for people victimized by life altering trauma.

Your Sociometer!

You must have the Adobe Flash Player installed to view this player.

Sally_2Your Sociometer Dr. Sally Downham Miller talks with me about the concept of a sociometer, a metaphor for the instintive reactions we have to other people, whether they are trustworthy or a possible threat. Interesting concept for understanding our relationships both good and bad.

What Actually Shapes You? Dr. Tom Dukes & I continue our conversation about the influences that shape us all - individually and as a society. And we fix the sound (we hope). We raise the notion of the Developmental Niche and it's way of thinking about the variables related to how we each evolve into adulthood.

What Actually Shapes You?

T_Dukes

What Actually Shapes You? Dr. Tom Dukes & I talk about the necessity to understand an individual taking full account of their context in life. Whether a family or group situation, a racial or ethnic context or religious affiliation, help can only happen when there is an understanding of the context variables that shape that person’s views and their reality.
